After Maria Sharapova revealed that she has no idea who Sachin Tendulkar is, outraged fans of the batting legend took on social media websites to pour out their anger.
While you wonder what Sharapova did to possess deserved a comparison with Bhatt, you stumble upon scores of tweets accusing her of being a bimbo. And that’s when you recognise that the top trend on Twitter in India is one meant to troll Sharapova. And what’s her great sin? She doesn’t know who Sachin Tendulkar is.
The five-time Grand Slam champion’s Facebook page was full of aggressive remarks by surfers who have been ‘determined to teach her a lesson.’ It overflowed on Twitter too with ‘#WhoisMariaSharapova’ becoming the very best trend worldwide.
Tendulkar was at the Wimbledon Royal Box on Saturday together with other celebrity sportsperson like David Beckham, former cricketer Andrew Strauss and golfer Ian Poulter.
When Sharapova was asked at her post-match press conference about the cricket icon who had come to see her play, the previous Wimbledon champion said she had met Beckham several times but wasn’t familiar with Tendulkar.
Tennis World reports that whenever Sharapova was asked: “Sachin Tendulkar was the other individual who came in at the same time as David (Beckham). Do you know who Sachin is?” The French Open champion replied: “I don’t.”
On Beckham, the Russian star said: “I’ve actually met him a few times at events in LA as well as in London. He is a great guy. Besides becoming an incredible football player, he has done this much in his career, using a family, maintaining so many things off the court. He’s a really nice person to talk to. We’re not best friends or anything, but it is nice to be able to say hello and congratulate each other on achievements we’ve had in our careers and so on.”
While she might possibly not have meant the comment as condescension and it was displaying her lack of knowledge concerning the poster-boy of a sport that she might not follow, Sachin fans were not too pleased. And also to show her how much she was in the wrong, they reportedly spammed her Facebook page with abuses and insults.
Sharapova also asserted the one sportsman she got star-struck while meeting was basketball legend Michael Jordan.
“Yeah, I randomly met Michael Jordan at a private airport. I do not even know why. I didn’t develop watching so much basketball. I had been like, Wow, that’s cool. I don’t really know the reason, but I consider all his success off and on the court, it’s great to meet someone like this. He recognized me, that is pretty cool I thought during the day,” Sharapova said.
Considering the fact that Tendulkar is really a regular visitor at Wimbledon and good friends with tennis legend Roger Federer, it comes down as a surprise that Sharapova is oblivious of the batting legend.
